How to Light Incense

Incense is an ideal way to add a delicate aroma into your home. Additionally, it can help boost focus and relaxation during meditation sessions.

It is essential to know how to safely light incense in order to reduce the risk of burns. Additionally, using an appropriate incense burner and holder is paramount.

Use a Burner

Before lighting incense on a burner, there are a few things you should know. First and foremost, ensure the burner is heatproof and secure; if not, spread some sand or salt over it to help dissipate the heat.

Another thing you must be mindful of is not allowing the incense to burn too long. Doing so could cause it to become too hot and potentially start a fire.

Be mindful when burning incense around children or pets; their senses may become irritated by the smoke.

One of the best ways to light incense is with a backflow incense burner. This type of burner creates a waterfall effect, allowing smoke to rise and fill your home with pleasant aromas.

Light the Charcoal

Light the charcoal using a lighter, matches or candle. Be cautious not to touch it with your bare hands as this could ignite quickly and burn you!

Once the flame is extinguished, insert a charcoal tablet in your burner with its hollow facing up. This will help hold incense and minimize the risk of it falling into the burner and burning.

Wait a few minutes until the charcoal is red hot and covered in grayish-white ash. This indicates that it’s ready for burning your incense!

Place the Incense in the Burner

Incense is an excellent way to relax and create a peaceful atmosphere in any room. Not only that, but it can also aid with meditation as well as reduce stress and anxiety levels.

For optimal fragrance, place incense in an area with proper air ventilation. This will prevent smoke from causing headaches and keep your space smelling delightfully fresh.

Choose an incense burner that can accommodate the size of the incense cone you plan to burn. Ideally, opt for a censer made of ceramic or stone.

If not, use a bowl large enough to catch any ash from the incense cone. Additionally, you can use sand or salt as an effective way to dissipate the heat generated by burning charcoal.

Once lit, incense can burn for up to 30 minutes. After that, it is essential to properly extinguish the flame in order to prevent fires and keep yourself and your home safe. Never leave burning incense unattended as this is hazardous for children, pets, as well as anyone living or working in the same house.

Extinguish the Flame

Before packing away your incense burner, be sure to extinguish the flame. Leaving burning incense unattended can pose a fire hazard. Fortunately, there are several methods available for dousing out the ember.

If you are using cone incense, simply ignite the tip with matches or a lighter and wait 5 to 10 seconds for the flame to rise before blowing it out. The smoke will then drift through the air, filling your home or spiritual practice with an aromatic scent that will fill the space.

Incense sticks burn for an extended period, typically between 45 minutes and an hour. At the end of this process, you’ll have a stick that is safe enough to store in a container and relight later.

Some incense, like charcoal discs, can be lit and extinguished multiple times before disposal. It is always best to follow the instructions that come with your incense and exercise caution when relighting any type of incense.
